"2046" may be a numeric reference to the eve to the end of Hong Kong's Special Administrative Region status to the People's Republic of China (in 1997 during Hong Kong's return to sovereignty, China promised the Special Administrative Region that it shall experience "50 years without change"). However, for Wong's film, 2046 is a hotel room number (both in this film and his previous film, "In The Mood for Love"), where a love-jaded, city nightlife, newspaper columnist in late 1960s Hong Kong pens an erotic sci-fi serial about people, based on people he has encountered in this hotel, returning to the year 2046 on a bullet train to locate a lost (happy/romantic) memory.
